As we approach the end of 2021, we want to acknowledge the progress made and thank you for your perseverance and resilience in the face of adversity. We hear and understand your frustration. Our goal is to see every Eligible Class Member receive their compensation.
In March 2021, the Sixties Scoop claims process reinstated all deadlines. Despite the challenges presented by COVID-19, claims continue to be reviewed by the Administrator, and we are getting closer and closer to resolution of this settlement.
To date, 19,041 claims have been approved based on the criteria outlined in the Settlement Agreement, with each claimant deemed an Eligible Class Member receiving an interim payment for $21,000.
As of December 8,850 claims are fully and finally denied, but not all claims follow a straight path from assessment to approval or denial. In fairness to all who make a claim application, many claims will be assessed and reassessed as new information is received. To provide additional support to the claims assessment process, the Administrator has hired additional reviewers.
We have heard your voices asking for more responsiveness and more specific information, and we’ve made significant changes that we hope have helped. For example, in June, we extended the hours of operation for our call center to provide better access to all regions and time zones across the country.
In addition, a new Reconsideration Officer was appointed to review requests for reconsideration.
We extend our wishes for a wonderful holiday to those who celebrate this season, and hope everyone has peace and comfort over the coming weeks.
